GREENFIELD, Calif. — October 27, 2026. A proposed agreement between Monterey County and the City of Greenfield would provide the county’s Public Defender’s Office with approximately 360 square feet of office space inside Greenfield City Hall at 599 El Camino Real.
The county’s October 20 Board of Supervisors agenda identifies the arrangement as A 26-438, a proposed retroactive one-year lease for $9,000, covering September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2027. At a simple 12-month average, that is $750 a month, although the governing contract should control payment details. Staff also seek authority for as many as two one-year renewal periods under similar terms.
Why it matters for South County
Public defenders provide legal representation in qualifying criminal and other proceedings when a person is entitled to appointed counsel and cannot afford an attorney. A local work location for staff could support service delivery in the southern Salinas Valley, where traveling to Salinas or other government offices can be burdensome.
However, the lease document is not a published opening announcement for a walk-in legal clinic. The county’s agenda does not establish a public counter, confirmed service hours, case-appointment availability, language services or that any particular resident qualifies for representation.
How to find out about legal assistance
Residents looking for appointed counsel should contact the Monterey County Public Defender or follow instructions from the court handling their matter. Visiting City Hall without an appointment may not provide direct legal assistance.
The October 20 county meeting’s approved minutes were not available when reviewed, so this report treats the lease as a proposal listed for approval, not as independent evidence that the office is open for clients.
