GREENFIELD, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. A major wastewater project could reshape Greenfield’s utility costs over the coming years. The city’s dedicated treatment and conservation information site describes a multiyear effort to modernize aging wastewater infrastructure and says officials are pursuing as much as $75 million in state and federal grant support.
How far along is the plan?
The public project timeline places planning in 2026–27, design in 2027–28, construction during 2028–29 and estimated completion in 2029. These are projections, not confirmation that a building contract has been signed or every grant secured.
What could customers pay?
The city presents one unfavorable financing scenario that combines a State Revolving Fund loan with a phased sequence of wastewater rate adjustments if outside grants do not cover enough of the investment. The site describes potential percentage increases in future years, but a worst-case scenario is not the same as adopted rates on a customer’s next bill. Homeowners, renters and businesses should consult official approved rate notices and the governing rate process.
Questions for residents
How much grant money is actually obligated? What part of project cost will require loans? Which treatment outcomes must the redesigned plant meet, and how much will the work cost to operate? All of those questions deserve published answers as engineering and funding decisions mature.
