GREENFIELD / SALINAS VALLEY, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. Families who rely on rural groundwater systems near Greenfield may qualify for a free home water-efficiency assessment. The Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency announced September 9 that it had expanded the Water Efficiency Pilot Program for Rural Residents to all six subbasins in its jurisdiction, with visits available until the end of 2026 or until funding capacity is reached.
What does the visit cover?
Qualified technicians review faucets, toilets, showers, irrigation timers and other equipment for leaks or avoidable water use. A household receives a personalized report and may qualify for installation of selected water-saving devices at no charge. It is not a promise that the agency will fund a new well, pay a utility bill or install every appliance an owner requests.
Who can participate?
The program is aimed at residents who own or rent homes in qualifying rural parts of the Salinas Valley’s six groundwater subbasins and are not served by a large water provider. A resident or representative over 18 must be present, and property-owner consent is required for staff entry. Assessment appointments are usually offered Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., on a first-come basis.
Apply: official Water Efficiency Pilot Program eligibility and online request. An application is not a guarantee of service; confirm your specific property qualifies.
Editorial note: This is a regional program affecting eligible rural Greenfield-area properties, not automatically every home inside city limits.
