GREENFIELD, Calif. — Greenfield homeowners may have more flexibility to park recreational vehicles, boats and trailers on private property under ordinance changes backed by the City Council on October 27, 2026.
The council voted 3–0 to approve changes allowing these vehicles to remain in front and side yards, provided they do not obstruct public rights-of-way, entrances, exits or emergency access. The move follows months of debate over how the city should regulate larger vehicles without creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians, emergency crews or neighbors.
Parking does not mean someone can live in an RV
The city’s reported decision makes an important distinction: parking an RV is not the same as legally using it as a residence. Living in parked recreational vehicles, including connecting them to a house’s sewer or electrical system for residential use, remains prohibited under the rules described after the council vote.
Owners should also consider whether their vehicles block visibility, walkways or driveways. The new allowances do not override traffic safety requirements or grant permission to occupy public streets indefinitely.
Why the rules changed
Greenfield began an RV parking pilot in 2024 to respond to complaints about congestion and limited space for large vehicles. Police Chief Guillermo Mixer supported the latest changes as a way to ease pressure on city streets, according to local reporting.
The October 27 vote came with two councilmembers absent. Residents should confirm the ordinance’s formal adoption and effective date before relying on the changes, since council approval of a proposal does not always mean every rule takes effect immediately.
How to check your property
Residents with questions about a specific driveway, side yard or trailer should contact Greenfield City Hall or review the most current municipal code. Rules may depend on whether a vehicle impedes emergency access or extends into a public area.
