GREENFIELD, Calif. — A Greenfield agricultural business is helping build the next generation of soccer fields in the Salinas Valley. Greenfield Turf is growing the grass selected for seven natural-grass fields at the Salinas Regional Soccer Complex, part of an eight-field expansion now under construction.

The new surfaces will use a blend of hybrid bluegrass and ryegrass, according to the complex’s August project update. Work began in July after more than six years of environmental remediation concluded in June. The project includes almost 20,000 linear feet of irrigation lines, with the fields expected to begin opening during the winter.

Why a Greenfield grower matters

Greenfield Turf’s role shows how regional agriculture can support projects beyond food production. The company is cultivating specialized playing surfaces that will be installed in Salinas as construction phases finish.

For local families, expanding the complex could increase access to practices, youth games and tournaments. The complex reports that its regional events already bring significant numbers of players and visitors to Salinas. The projected benefits, however, depend on completion schedules and the actual use of the additional fields.

Funding and next steps

The expansion is being supported by The Match, a $3 million fundraising campaign that began with a $1.5 million challenge gift from Taylor Farms. The complex has also described other public and private support for infrastructure and construction.

Work is not yet complete, and the fields should not be described as open until the organization confirms that they are ready for play. Residents can follow the project at salinassoccer.org/the-match.
